Eco Schools
Hava & Adam has established an Eco-Schools Project that is conducted in cooperation with kindergarten through junior high schools. The program is led by trained Hava & Adam counselors who are supervised by the project director and work in full concert with the school staff.
The aim is to let schoolchildren engage directly with the natural world and assess how their behavior impacts it; they are encouraged to ask questions about the elements in an ecosystem and what role each plays, what disrupts and what enhances ecosystems, and to include in their understanding of ecosystems the people and their relationships. These issues are studied both in the classroom and through supplemented weekly activities carried out in an "Ecological Garden Space”. The Space includes herb and vegetable beds, ecological biosphere structures, a water recycling system, as well as outdoor cooking. The area is planned and built by the students and the school’s educational staff under the guidance of Hava & Adam eco-counselors. The project experience is enhanced by school visits to the Hava and Adam Farm a number of times throughout the year.
The goal of the program is to teach that environmental concern is part of a larger package of social concerns and considerations. The program curriculum includes informal lessons and activities which encourage the child to become more aware of himself, his fellow beings and his surroundings.
Hava & Adam works in both Jewish and Arab schools.
Young Environmentalists - Madatzim
Eco-Schools also include a training course for students in grades 5-6. Each school’s group of Young Environmentalists are made up from a cross-section of the school’s student body. The trainees are taught leadership skills and attend meetings in school and on the Hava & Adam Farm and learn to take a leadership role with the younger students in their schools. Likewise, the Young Environmentalists play a prominent role in community events organized by Hava and Adam. The trainees help choose and implement city-wide environmental projects in their towns and communities; past examples include construction of a large-scale composter, placing bins for dog refuse in local parks and other public areas, publicizing and promoting paper recycling and so on.
